MEWP checklist: the checks before every use
Before using a MEWP, check five things: documents (VGP inspection up to date, operator's manual, driving authorisation), the work area, the condition of the machine, testing the controls and the emergency descent, and protective equipment. The free PDF checklist below covers all these points, ready to tick off.
A short checklist, designed to be filled in on site in a few minutes by the MEWP operator.
The 5 blocks of the checklist
- Documents: VGP inspection less than 6 months old, manufacturer's manual in the MEWP, operator trained and authorised
- Work area: stable ground, no overhead power line nearby, area cordoned off, wind within limits
- Machine inspection: leaks, tyres, structure, guard rails, load plates, battery or fuel
- Tests: ground and platform controls, emergency stops, emergency descent, alarms, horn
- Equipment: harness attached on boom-type MEWPs, helmet, a ground person who knows the rescue procedure
How to use it
- Print a few copies and keep them in the cab or the vehicle.
- Fill in the header: machine, date, operator, site, hour meter.
- Tick each point as "OK" or "Not OK".
- If a safety-related point is "Not OK" (emergency stop, emergency descent, structure), don't use the MEWP and notify your manager.
- Sign and keep the sheet: it records what was checked.
Hired MEWP: the extra points
For a hired MEWP, ask for the report of the last periodic thorough inspection (VGP) and the operator's manual. Check the MEWP is suited to the job (height, load, terrain, indoor or outdoor) before putting it into service.
The detailed guide "MEWP pre-use inspection" explains each point and what the regulations say.
From paper to phone
Paper works, but sheets get lost and the office only hears about problems late. With Trackary, the operator reports a fault from their phone, with a photo and a severity level, even without a network. The fleet manager sees it as soon as it syncs and can take the machine out of service.
Replace paper with the Trackary app: checklists and faults with photos, even offline. Request a demo →
