Construction equipment checklist: the equipment walkaround before you start

In brief

The shift start-up checklist for a piece of construction equipment takes a few minutes: documents, equipment walkaround (leaks, tyres or tracks, hoses, attachment), fluid levels, cab (seatbelt, controls, alarms) and greasing. Two free PDF templates are provided: construction equipment and mini excavator.

Excavator, wheel loader, backhoe loader, telehandler or mini excavator: the same routine every morning avoids a lot of breakdowns and accidents.

What gets checked

BlockExample points
DocumentsVGP up to date if the equipment is used for lifting, operator authorisation, manual
Equipment walkaroundLeaks, tyres or tracks, hoses, bucket, teeth, pins, locking pins, mirrors, lights
Fluid levelsEngine oil, coolant, hydraulic oil, fuel

GreasingJoints greased per the manual, quick-coupler locked

How to use it

  1. Print the right template: construction equipment or mini excavator.
  2. Walk around the equipment, engine off, before climbing in.
  3. Tick each point and note the hour meter reading.
  4. Report any fault to the person in charge before working.
  5. Keep the sheets: they feed the machine’s maintenance logbook.

Why it’s useful

A leak spotted in the morning costs a hose; the same leak ignored can put the machine out of action on site. The checklist also gives a record of what was checked, useful for the fleet manager and in case of an incident.

Adapt the list to your machines: the manufacturer’s manual remains the reference for maintenance points and intervals.

And after paper?

In Trackary, mechanics and operators report an anomaly from their phone, with a photo and severity, even without a connection. The manager sees the status of every machine and schedules the repair.

Anomalies noted on paper reach the office late: with Trackary, they arrive with the photo. Request a demo →

Frequently asked questions

How long does the checklist take?

Generally a few minutes, once it becomes routine.

Should it be done every time the operator changes?

It is recommended: each operator checks the equipment they are taking over.

Does a mini excavator need a VGP inspection?

If it is fitted and used for lifting loads (hook, lifting eye), it falls under the inspections for lifting appliances. See the “Is VGP mandatory or not” page.

Can I add my own points?

Yes, the template is free to edit. Add points specific to your equipment and its manuals.
